Reptiles Eyes for Craft Projects
- Googly eyes are little clear discs with a white background; they have a black "pupil" that rolls around crazily in the disc when moved around. They are available in a number of sizes from 4 mm to 40 mm and a large number of colors. Googly eyes have different attachment styles for whatever craft project they are used for. Some come with a flat back, designed to be glued to the craft, some have a button loop on the back to be sewn on, and some are actual rivets, connecting to the project in two pieces. Googly eyes are relatively inexpensive depending on the color, size and whether purchased individually or in bulk. Individually, at the time of publication, they cost anywhere from $0.29 for a set of two, to $8 for a package of 144.
- Button eyes are another option for a reptile craft project. Buttons come in different colors, sizes and styles. They buttons that work best for reptile eyes are the basic, black, plastic round buttons with a convex front. They have tabs on the back with holes, making it necessary to sew the eye in place as opposed to just gluing; this means buttons are better for cloth reptile projects than wood or ceramic. Buttons are usually sold attached to a card holding anywhere from two buttons to 10 per card. At the time of publication, the price was approximately $0.60 for a card with two buttons to $4 for a card with 10.
- Felt eyes for reptile crafts are inexpensive but are a little more effort than buttons or googly eyes. For felt eyes, you will need pre-cut felt circles. Pre-cut circles come in all sizes and shapes, for a reptile, a you need only white and black round felt circles. Use a white felt circle placing a smaller black felt circle on top of it. It will resemble a googly eye without the plastic or the movement. Felt eyes can be glued to the project or sewn. If they are to be sewn, each piece must be sewn individually all the way around in matching thread, so it is not obvious. Ranging in size from 1/2 inch to 5 inches, the price ranges from $1 to $5 for a set of 12 at the time of publication.
- If you want realism for a reptile craft, true reptile eyes can be found. Normally, specialty hobby stores that cater to people who make fishing lures will have them, or they are available online. The reptile eyes are plastic just like googly eyes are, but intended to appear authentic. The eyes are available in various colors, ranging in size from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch and cost approximately $9 to $17 for a set of two eyes at the time of publication. These reptile eyes are flat back and intended to be glued to the reptile project.
