Your Uric Acid Diet - Foods to Avoid With Gout

36
A so-called uric acid diet is a low purine diet that avoids gout causing foods.
Here, you'll find the foods to avoid with gout and the foods to eat as part of a uric acid diet.
The term 'uric acid diet' is really incorrect.
What is really meant is a diet that helps to reduce the uric acid levels in your blood.
And you need to lower and maintain them at these healthy levels simply because high uric acid levels can lead to the formation of urate crystals in your joint(s) that cause the symptoms of gout.
Uric acid is formed out of the breakdown of important chemical compounds in your body called purines.
Your kidneys normally process the acid and excrete excess out of your body, leaving relatively low levels in your blood.
Occasionally, for a number of reasons, they fail to do this and you end up with higher-than-normal acid levels that can lead to crystals in your joints and so excruciating gout.
But here's the problem, purines also exist in foods at a range of concentrations, from relatively low to very high purine levels.
So, if you suffer from gout, you need to seriously address your diet if you want to lower your uric acid and maintain it healthier lower levels.
Basically, you need to avoid foods that are high in purines, and, eat a diet of foods that have relatively low purine concentrations...
YOUR URIC ACID DIET Here are relatively low purine foods that you can eat as part of an excellent gout diet:- Vegetables; cabbage, parsley, kale, green-leaf vegetables, but not cauliflower, spinach or asparagus.
High vitamin C foods; red bell peppers, red cabbage, potatoes, oranges, mandarins, etc.
Low-fat dairy foods; cheese, milk (not soya), yoghurt, etc.
Complex carbohydrates; rice, pasta, cereals, breads (not white flour), vegetables and fruit, etc.
Essential fatty acids; seeds, nuts, flaxseeds, tuna, etc.
FOODS TO AVOID WITH GOUT You should avoid those foods that are high or very high in purines.
So you need to avoid:- Fatty red meat; steaks, roasts, burgers, etc.
Game; venison, squirrel, pheasant, grouse, etc.
Poultry; turkey, duck, etc.
Offal meat; liver, kidneys, heart, etc.
Certain fish; e.
g.
mackerel, herring, anchovies, sardines, etc.
Shellfish; shrimp, prawns, scallops, mussels, etc.
Dried legumes.
Yeast and yeast products.
Alcohol, particularly beer.
Now, whilst your 'uric acid diet' is a solid base to help you control your gout, there are many other issues that can affect the likelihood of you having more gout attacks.
These are things like your weight position, any meds that you are taking, any existing medical conditions, your family history, your lifestyle, etc.
And you don't want to be having multiple gout attacks because of the potential dangers of permanent joint damage and kidney problems over time.
