Homemade Dog Treats Benefit You And Your Dog

48
Giving your dog treats is a great way to reinforce training. Unfortunately many people give dog treats like they are food. Giving store bought treats can be expensive and giving too many treats can cause obesity. There is a large variety of treats available and it could be hard to find some that your dog will like. Homemade dog treats are healthier for your dog and save you a lot of money.

Using baking items that you already have at home, you can whip up a tasty batch of homemade treats in about a half an hour. There are some foods and treats that your dog cannot or should not have but homemade treats are safe and easy to chew.

1. Some dogs will just about inhale their food; they do not chew it up well. The harder treats that clean your dog's teeth and freshen their breath should be avoided for this type of eater.

2. Rawhide chews can keep a dog busy for days but this type of treat or toy can cause your dog digestion problems. The rawhide is not easily digested; in fact it can sit in the dog's stomach like the plastic pieces from some toys. If you do decide to give your dog rawhide treats, check to make sure the treat was manufactured in the United States. Not all countries use safe ingredients or have laws in place prohibiting the use of certain deadly chemicals, but the US is one that does. Limit the amount of rawhide treats you give your dog and they should be safe.

3. Chocolate, especially the dark chocolate, can make a dog sick and even cause death. If your dog has gotten into you should contact your vet right away. You may need to induce vomiting or take him to the office. If you can't get a hold of your vet a poison control representative may be able to help.

4. Every type of bone is not good for a dog but there are some you can find at your local butcher or meat department. These are usually large soup bones and you might consider boiling them to cook the meat before giving them to your dog.

Giving your dog a treat and lots of praise is one of the best ways to reward him for good behavior. A lot of dogs are very picky eaters and may not like many of the treats available at the store. Homemade dog treats are usually easy for your dog to chew and easy on their digestive system. These are the kind of treats you can feel good about giving to your dog. You know they are made with love and healthy ingredients.
