Plasma Cutters - Are You Using Them to the Fullest?

28
Plasma cutters and their uses are known to many but not everyone is fully familiar with their advantage and features in the automotive industry.
Plasma which is considered to be a fourth state for matter after: solids, liquids, and gases, and is created by heating gas to an extreme high temperature.
In plasma electrons coexist with ions crashing against one another and releasing lots of energy which cuts easily through metals.
Simply put plasma cutters feed an inert gas at high velocity through a narrow perfectly round channel at the nozzle, this is turned into plasma by adding an electric spark.
Older models create the spark by closing an electric circuit between a negatively charged nozzle and a positively charged metal plate, this limited their use to electric conducting materials.
More recent models create the spark within the nozzle which give the newer models a broader range of uses as they can now also cut non-conductive materials.
Plasma cutters do little damage beyond the immediate cutting area.
Beyond the immediate cutting area the metal stays cool, distortion from heat and paint damage usually seen when using a flame cutter is prevented.
Other advantage are the speed and accuracy of cutting.
These cutters have speeds of as much as five times that of flame cutters There are three principal types of plasma cutters available to choose from: * The compact type * Low amp styles * High amp styles The compact type are portable in nature and use a 120V AC power supply and are useful for on-site work.
The low amp style is a more robust machine using either 120V or 230V power supply.
The high amp style are found in industrial settings with intense and constant usage and are generally remain fixed in one place.
Whilst these machines unlike flame based cutters do not use dangerous gasses they do use high voltage electricity.
An electric shock from from any electrical equipment could be fatal and you should take adequate precautions.
In addition the work area should be ventilated properly as plasma cutters produce toxic fumes when working.
By taking proper precautions this equipment can be used for auto repair work without fear.
This gives a short summary of plasma cutters and their uses to get more information follow the link in the resource box below.
