How to Stain a Knots Deck
- 1). Sweep the dust off your deck and then wash it with soap and water. Allow the wood to dry.
- 2). Stain the railings on your deck first. Lay down a plastic tarp to keep stain from splattering onto your knotted wood deck. Dip a paintbrush into your wood stain, and then brush it on in the same direction as the grain of the wood.
- 3). Stain the deck floor once you finish your first coat of stain on the railings. Wait at least four hours before you apply a second coat of stain.
- 4). Dip a foam paintbrush in amber shellac and apply the shellac to the knotted areas of your wood deck. Generously seal the areas with two coats of amber shellac to prevent the stain in the knot from bleeding out into the rest of the deck. Only apply shellac to the knot; do not apply it to the rest of the deck. Allow the amber shellac to dry completely before you seal your deck.
- 5). Seal your knotted stain deck with two coats of polyurethane. Brush the polyurethane onto the deck in the same direction as the grain of the wood. Wait for the first coat to dry before you apply a second coat of polyurethane.
