How to Know How Old Your New Tire Really Is
- 1). A tire should not sit on a shelf for more than 2 or 3 years before being put on a car. If it is older than 2 years and has been sitting on the shelf pass it by. DONT BUY IT even if it does look new!!
- 2). How do you find the DOT number. A lot of tire makers put the code on the inside of the tire wall. But starting October 2009 all tire manufactures must put the number on the outside wall of the tire to make it easier to find.
- 3). Once you get the number how do you determine how old the tire is? First two digits are the WEEK it was made. The last two digits are the YEAR. If it only has 3 number it means it was made before 2000 example 179 means the seventeenth week in 1999.
