How do I Build a 30-Foot Gate?
- 1). Before you start, make sure that your project complies with zoning laws, that you have all necessary permits and that your fence and gate don't violate any property boundaries. You may need to have your land surveyed.
- 2). Determine the height and length the gate should be. A sliding gate will need to be slightly longer than the opening, while swinging gates need to be slightly shorter to accommodate posts and hardware. Sliding gates should also be shorter than the surrounding fence, to allow for wheels and track.
- 3). Draw up plans for your gate using proper measurements.
- 4). Begin by welding the frame of your gates. Dividing each frame into a series of smaller rectangles is an ideal pattern.
- 5). After the frames are ready, weld cross bars, inserting them horizontally into the frame.
- 6). A sliding gate will require that one half of your gate have brackets for the other half to slide along, as well as elbow brackets to act as "stops."
- 7). Before your hang the gates, make sure your posts are set in deeply enough and reinforced with concrete. If they are old, you may need to replace or reinforce them.
- 8). If you are using swinging gates, hang them using hardware suitable for their weight. You can add a padlock or latch, or simply chain them together. Use a plumb line, level and square to ensure they hang correctly.
- 9). Before you install sliding gates, dig a channel and install the wheel track.
- 10
If you are fabricating sliding gates, attach the wheel apparatus to each side. - 11
Slide the gates into place; using wax if necessary.
