Every control on the Rancilio Silvia is conveniently located right on the front of the machine. With a simple flip of a switch the Rancilio is up and running. There is a small indicator lamp on the switch itself which lets you know when the machine is powered up and ready to make you a wonderful tasting espresso. There is a larger lamp next to the power switch that tells you when power is being supplied to the heating element. Once you turn the power switch on the Rancilio Silvia is ready to perform.
There are 3 switches to the left side of the Rancilio Silvia. The top switch is the "brewing switch". When you are ready for a steaming cup of espresso all you have to do is turn this switch and heated water is then pumped to the brewing group.
The center switch of the three is for hot water. You turn this switch on, place a vessel underneath the steam wand, open the steam valve and hot water is then dispensed through the wand. The bottom switch of the three then turns on the steam function of the Rancilio Silvia. When the heating element goes off you then know that the machine is ready and is producing sufficient steam.
