Tennis legend Billie Jean King has recently launched a new ad campaign in the fight against osteoarthritis.
The campaign was put together by the Arthritis Foundation, the Ad Council, and the United States Tennis Association in an effort to educate osteoarthritis sufferers of the benefits of regular activity in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
The ads, which debuted during the airing of the US Open, focused on the benefits of activity, whether biking and swimming, walking, or tennis in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
The campaign, which was designed pro bono by the well know ad agency, Y&R, will be used in television, radio, print, outdoor, and web ad outlets.
Billie Jean King has had chronic osteoarthritis for decades.
It started in her 20s, and the former tennis star had both knees replaced in 2010.
In the press release announcing the campaign, the tennis star said "If you have arthritis, don't think you should become sedentary.
It's just the opposite-think positively and make sure you move.
Take a walk in the park, play tennis, or take a hike.
Do whatever works for you but keep moving.
" 50 million people suffer from various forms of arthritis, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that up to 67 million people could be affected by 2030.
The most common form of arthritis affecting Americans is osteoarthritis, affecting about 27 million people in the United States.
Unfortunately, in CDC studies, the agency has found that only about one in six arthritis sufferers feel that they can manage their pain.
Hence, the focus on movement and exercise.
A variety of exercise options exist that can help arthritis sufferers.
Generally, there are three types of exercise that can help: 1.
Range of motion exercises to reduce stiffness 2.
Strengthening exercises to maintain or increase muscle strength 3.
Endurance exercise to build fitness.
It is best to start slowly, with stretching and other flexibility exercises, and then to build up to weight training and endurance exercises, such as bicycling or swimming.
If you feel like you are in too much pain to start exercising, a water exercise program might be a good start.
In the water, your body's buoyancy reduces stress on many of the joints that typically suffer from arthritis symptoms.
Water walking is a perfect example of such an exercise.
Since water is 12 times as resistant as air, you get a lot of exercise without putting stress on your joints.
The Arthritis Foundation website is a good source for exercise ideas and videos.
YouTube also contains a wealth of educational videos on this subject.
However you start out, you should consult a doctor before undertaking your exercise program.
