Insomniac? Can"t Sleep? Find Out How to Sleep Deeply and Naturally

The first thing to realize is that you are definitely not alone.
Insomnia or sleep deprivation is the most common mental health problem in the Western World and that 1 in 10 people will suffer from chronic insomnia at sometime in their lives.
Some quick points, Insomnia is diagnosed according to:
  • the time it takes to get to sleep - if it takes more than 30 minutes
  • total sleep time - if it is somewhere between 3 and 6 hours and unrefreshing
  • the sleep problems cause major disruption to normal daylight functions
  • the sleep disorders have lasted more than 3 months
  • there are no medical causes for not sleeping
It is easy to get sleeplessness and insomnia mixed up:
  • sleeplessness are those times when you can't sleep but know the reason why
  • insomnia is when you can't sleep but can't work out why
One of the reasons why insomnia occurs is due to the body's internal clock.
This sets the body's circadian rhythm and also regulates many body functions which affect sleep.
If this clock breaks down or goes out of sync it is thought that the production of melatonin in the pineal gland is disturbed.
In simplistic terms Melatonin is a hormone and informs the human (and other animals) brains that daylight is over and darkness has arrived.
Usually more hormone is secreted the darker it gets and then levels out in the middle of nighttime and is stopped at dawn.
So what other things should be considered for insomniacs who need sleep help.
The first thing I would say to someone who said to me - i can't sleep - check out the bed! A good bed which promotes natural sleep is vital as you may spend up to a third of your life in it! Rather than hard or soft mattress, it is better to consider the firmness.
This firmness should coincide with a persons weight, the greater the bodyweight, the firmer the bed should be.
Some people think the direction in which the bed lies is important, north-south or east-west.
Although Charles Dickens believed this and thought the magnetic forces were responsible, it is now considered a false theory.
Still discussing the mechanical side of things, the pillow is a very important area to consider.
To thin or too fat will cause distortion of the neck vertebrae, getting just the right thickness will allow the proper alignment of the neck and spine.
The material from which the pillow is made is also important and needs to be hypoallergenic to help prevent dust mite allergy problems.
As this is such a complicated area I am going to just list further areas to consider without going into detail and then write new articles which will address each possible cause and remedy.
Other area to consider are:
  • diet - take care what you eat
  • limit the amount of alcohol you consume
  • try to relax before retiring to bed
  • read a relaxing book rather than one which has the mind spinning
  • avoid coffee and nicotine
