Milli Vanilli was awarded a "Best New Artist" Grammy in 1990, but it was taken away because of a lip-syncing debacle. In 1989, Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan were "singing" onstage during an MTV show in Connecticut when a vocal track skipped. The next year, scrutiny by critics prompted the manager of the group to admit the duo did not perform the vocals on their Grammy-winning record. The award was revoked and they were never able to live down the scandal. In 1998, Pilatus died of an overdose in a hotel in Germany. - Ashlee Simpson blamed her band for playing the wrong tune when she was caught lip-syncing on "Saturday Night Live" in October 2004. Simpson had her microphone down at her side, but the audience heard her vocals from one song while her band started another. Simpson did a little jig and walked off stage. Simpson blamed her band, her record company blamed a computer glitch, and later Simpson said she had a sore throat and a doctor didn't want her to sing at all. Simpson's reputation suffered a severe blow. She was booed in January 2005 while performing during an Orange Bowl halftime show in Miami.

Britney Spears has often been accused of lip-syncing on stage. During a 2009 visit to Australia, Australian officials wanted to put a disclaimer on her concert ticket so fans would know that not all portions of her concert would not be live. In a People.com article published in November 2009, author Tim Nudd stated, "It's no secret that many artists, including Spears, lip-sync at times during their elaborate stage shows." - A child performer didn't sing her own song in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.Al Bello/Getty Images Sport/Getty Images
During the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, television viewers saw a darling 9-year-old girl singing "Ode to the Motherland" as the Chinese flag appeared in the stadium. It was soon revealed that the real singer was another little girl that Chinese officials deemed not suitable to be the face of China. The musical director claimed that it was for national interest, and that the child who represented their country should be flawless. When the public found out what happened, China suffered public embarrassment and later that year made lip-syncing illegal in their country.
