What Type of Fireplace Rebate Is Required For A Balanced Flue Gas Fire?

8
Balanced Flue gas fires have been around for many years and are a great alternative for homeowners who do not have a chimney to vent a conventional gas fire.
How Balanced Flue Fires Work 1.
Balanced Flue fires simply are vented out of an external wall rather than up a chimney or flue 2.
Conventional gas fires cannot be converted to incorporate this technology and balanced flue gas fires are specially designed to be externally vented 3.
The Fire is pushed as far back to the external wall as possible and the fire is vented out of the exterior wall.
Essentially some external brick work is removed and the vent is extracted outside the property.
There is a cap at the exterior outlet of the fire.

Balanced flue gas fires are glass fronted.
Although this is a major criticism of the visual effect of the fire the glass front is a vital part of the technology needed to make the fire work efficiently.
The glass front prevents cold air coming into the room from the exterior wall.
Glass fronted fires also add to the overall efficiency of the fire and as a result balanced flue fires are up to 98% efficient depending on the make and model Some manufacturers make externally vented fires without a glass front (called a power flue fire).
This could lead to a cold draft coming into your home as they have no way to prevent cold air from being channelled into the room from the external wall (remember there is a purpose built hole outside the property).
What fire surround void (rebate) should you specify? When installing a Balanced Flue gas fire it will be easier to install with a fire surround with virtually no void (rebate).
The fireplace terminology for void is referred to as a rebate.
The rebate is technically the distance from the back of the wall to the front of the back panel.
You should hence look for a fire surround with a 25mm rebate (hence panel is touching wall as 25mm - 20mm thickness of panel = 5mm).
If you order a fire surround with a deeper void (rebate), then this excess void will need to be filled with non combustible material, and this makes it harder to fit the fire and fireplaces generally.
Many retailers and websites will stock fireplaces with a large rebate as it means they are more flexible as the firepalce can be used for a flat wall installation of an electric fireplace if needed (where by there is no chimney to recess depth).
