How to Add a Hose Bib to an Irrigation System
- 1). Turn off the water supply to the irrigation system. Determine where to install a hose bib fitting.
- 2). Expose the irrigation pipe where you will install the hose bib fitting, and cut the pipe with a saw that is the correct kind for the type of pipe. Make a second cut on the pipe 1/2 inch from the first cut. It will allow the pipe to accept a T fitting. Apply pipe primer and pipe glue to both ends of the pipe and the hose bib fitting. Install the T fitting into the cut in the pipe.
- 3). Apply the primer and glue to a length of pipe for the rise of the hose bib into the third side of the T fitting. Cut the length of pipe to the desired measurement after the glue dries. Recover the main irrigation line with soil if digging was necessary to expose the line.
- 4). Put the primer and glue on a threaded fitting to the end of the riser pipe, and then wrap Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape around the threads of the fitting. Install the hose bib fitting on the threaded fitting. tighten to no more than 1/2 turn beyond the amount you can tighten the pipe easily by hand.
- 5). Turn on the water supply back to the irrigation system, and test the hose bib. Verify that none of the fitting connections leak.
