How to Troubleshoot the Timer on a Kenmore Electric Dryer
- 1). Unplug the dryer by removing the electrical socket from the wall outlet, or turning off the circuit at the breaker box.
- 2). Open the control panel of the dryer by removing the securing screws. The location of the screws will depend on the model. Often they will be located at the back of the unit, near the top. If you are unable to find the screws on your dryer, refer to the User's manual. Set the disconnected panel on top of the towel on the dryer. This will protect both surfaces from scratches.
- 3). Lay a towel on the base of the dryer to protect both surfaces from scratches. Locate the wires that provide power to the timer. The wire layout may vary between models. Look for the largest wires. These will be the power wires. Remove the leads with needle nose pliers. Grasp the connector with the pliers, and gently pull it off the terminal.
- 4). Turn the dial on the timer to read "normal."
- 5). Attach a multimeter, set to read ohms, to the terminals on the timer. There should be no reading on the meter. The display should remain at zero. If the meter jumps, this indicates a bad timer motor, and you should order a new timer for the unit.
