How to Replace a Bigger Gas Tank on My Motorcycle
- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Look below the gas tank and locate the wire connection terminals for the in-tank gauges. Locate the speedometer cable connection on the front wheel or the engine crankcase.
- 2). Disconnect any wires for the gas gauge or other gauge where they connect to a push-on tab or snap-in connector. Loosen the speedometer cable fitting from the front wheel or engine crankcase.
- 3). Close the fuel petcock on the underside of the gas tank. Remove the fuel line clamp and pull the fuel line off the petcock.
- 4). Remove the bolts that hold the tank to the mounts. Depending on your motorcycle, it may be necessary to remove the seat to access the rear bolt. With the bolts removed, lift the tank off the motorcycle.
- 5). Empty any residual gasoline from the tank into a container for proper disposal. Place the empty gas tank upside down on a workbench.
- 1). Loosen the speedometer cable from the fitting on the underside of the speedometer. Set the cable aside.
- 2). Inspect the petcock on the replacement tank to make sure it switches from closed to open properly. If necessary, remove the petcock from the old tank or install a new petcock. Most are held in place with two screws and have a gasket between the petcock and the tank. Install a new gasket when changing or replacing the petcock.
- 3). Turn the tank upright. Remove the trim rings on the speedometer and any gauges. Carefully work the speedometer and gauges out of the housing on the gas tank. Install the speedometer and gauges into the housing on the new tank and reattach the trim rings.
- 4). Turn the new tank over and place it on a soft cloth or towel to prevent scratching the finish and gauges. Connect the speedometer cable to the back of the speedometer.
- 5). Put the tank on the motorcycle. Attach the tank to the mounts on the motorcycle using the saved bolts. Connect the speedometer cable to the fitting on the front wheel or engine crankcase. Reattach the fuel line to the petcock and tighten the clamp. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.
