When I first opened my chiropractic office in San Diego in 1993, I was 28 years old. Like most people in their 20's, I had preconceived ideas regarding older patients. Of course, when I was 28, an "older" patient was anyone over 40. Regardless of how "old" they were, they had the same complaints of neck pain, back pain and headaches that my younger chiropractic patients deal with. Now that I am in my forties I realize how distorted my thoughts on "older" were!
That being said, I have always enjoyed the "older" patients in my practice. During my time in practice, I have found that most patients end up being patients because of de-conditioning (O.K., lack of exercise). This is true especially for older patients and it is often complicated by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. Chiropractic care is able to provide great relief for these conditions. However, the problem of insufficient exercise must be addressed as well.
The skeletal system is basic. The individual bones come together, separated by a cartilage pad, to form a joint. The joint is stabilized and moved by ligaments and muscles.
