How to Replace a Tecumseh Primer

1
    • 1). Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug, located on the front side of the engine.

    • 2). Tear off the faulty primer bulb from the side of the carburetor, using a pair of pliers. The round-shaped primer bulb features a red exterior, located on the left side of the engine. Tear off enough of the primer bulb to expose the tabbed retaining ring and inside portion of the carburetor.

    • 3). Pry the tabbed retaining ring out of the carburetor using a hooked pick tool. Remove the remaining portion of the primer bulb from the carburetor.

    • 4). Clean out any debris present within the carburetor's primer bulb mounting surface, using a flat-head screwdriver and thin rag.

    • 5). Slide the new retaining ring over the new primer bulb, with the small tabs on the retaining ring facing up.

    • 6). Slide a 19 mm deep well socket over the top of the retaining ring and primer bulb.

    • 7). Hold the socket and primer bulb together and insert the primer bulb into the appropriate mounting hole on the carburetor. While holding the socket in place, lightly strike the backside of the socket several times using a rubber mallet.

    • 8). Remove the socket from the primer bulb. Gently pull on the primer bulb to ensure that the retaining clip seated correctly within the carburetor. Replace the engine's spark plug wire to finish the replacement process.
