Sick Building Syndrome - Are You Next?

60
Sick Building Syndrome, or SBS, is a term used to describe a building, either commercial or residential, which is a nest for potential health concerns.
Unfortunately, possible diseases that can be caught from such buildings have yet to be completely understood, but there's no denying the health risks it poses.
The leading cause for SBS has been found to be a dysfunctional HVAC system, that is, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning systems.
There are many gases, volatile compounds, byproducts, lack of sunlight, moisture, and other factors which can also cause SBS; however, these factors may also cause major health risks amongst all family members, and the employees as well.
SBS Symptoms There are many symptoms which can be observed in individuals spending time in a sick building.
These include: • Irritation of eyes • Irritation of nose (sinus) • Irritation of throat • Skin Irritation • Infections • Smelling of unbearable odors • Unexplainable taste sensations • Hypersensitivity reactions • Asthma (alike breathing problems) • Tightness of chest and/or wheezing • Headaches • Fatigue • Irritability • Gastrointestinal complaints • Increase in stress • Poor interpersonal relationships • Work dissatisfaction • Some may experience change in behavior in different environments (psychological factor) Prevention of SBS As mentioned before, this is caused by poor ventilation and the inability of harmful components to exit the building and let fresh air ventilate.
In order to treat SBS, it is important that the owner of the commercial building, or the homeowners of the residential homes, make sure there is a proper ventilating for HVAC system before they start working or living inside that particular building.
It is also important to have the ventilation and air ducts inspected and cleaned to get rid of the extra dust particles which may be blocking the way of the fresh air.
The use of Cold Plasma air purification technology to kill bacteria, mold, and other harmful airborne pathogens, is a useful strategy as well.
Use environment friendly items cleaning chemicals- that contain little no chemicals at all, and help prevent the spreading of harmful chemicals compounds throughout house or building.
If there is a water leak from the ceiling, wall, or anywhere at all within the building, get it cleaned and fixed as soon as you possibly can.
The gathering of the water can cause mold and other bacteria which also contribute to air pollution.
This may cause termites within the walls, resulting in release of bad odor which will make things even more complicated.
In order to avoid all of this, be sure that there is no moisture on the floors or walls.
Getting the right HVAC system is critical, unless you want to put everyone within the property at risk of a number of airborne diseases.
Indoor air quality is a serious issue, the health risks warrant a thorough approach to resolve.
