Trane Heater Troubleshooting

    • 1). Check that the gas inlet valve is in the "On" position if the heater is running but not heating and you have a gas- or propane-fueled Trane furnace. Because the gas or propane provides the fuel for heating, the system will just blow air if the gas valve is not on.

    • 2). Verify that the system is plugged in. Look at the thermostat. If there are no symbols on the digital display, somehow the system has been turned off. Reset the plug and try again.

    • 3). Go to the circuit breaker box and ensure that the breaker has not been tripped on the furnace. If the breaker is tripped, even slightly, the furnace won’t work properly. Reset the circuit breaker accordingly.

    • 4). Clean all the cold air returns. To run properly, the heater needs cold air to operate, and plugged cold air returns affect the functioning of the system.

    • 5). Verify that the thermostat is on and set to heat. There are multiple settings on the thermostat, especially if it is a part of an overall heating and air-conditioning system. The thermostat usually has four settings: auto, heat, cool and fan.

    • 6). Check the temperature setting on the thermostat. If the setting is outside the range to kick the heater on, the heater will not come on.

    • 7). Inspect the furnace. If the door is not properly closed on the heater, it will not operate at all. There is a little switch that trips when the door is not closed properly, which keeps the heater from kicking on with the door open. Look through the inspection glass and verify that the light is on. If it's off, the door is not shut properly or the system has no power.

    • 8). Turn off the thermostat to allow it to reset. Give it a few minutes and then turn it back on.

    • 9). Kick the circuit breaker on and off, as sometimes this will act to reset the heater.
