Transparent Ocean Techniques for Latex Paint
- Paint a blue base color onto the surface of the wall. Allow to dry for ten minutes then use a wet rag to wash the wall. The water makes the latex paint transparent in a random patterns which mimics the look of the ocean. You'll need several clean rags and a bucket of water to complete a large area using this method.
- Mix the blue paint with paint glaze using six parts glaze to one part paint. The glaze makes the latex paint transparent, allowing you to paint any surface with an ocean water effect. Paint the latex paint and glaze mixture onto the wall in a wave pattern, making the color thicker and so darker at the bottom, and lighter at the top. Since light always comes from above the ocean, this will mimic the ocean realistically.
- Paint the surface a matte, light blue and let it dry. Dip a rag in a lighter, gloss blue mixed with water and brush the thinned paint on the wall. Allow this to dry and repeat the process with a rag of darker blue gloss paint thinned with water. Mix the paint and water so it is three parts water to one part paint to make it translucent. Add small amounts of white to represent sea foam and cresting waves.
- Paint the surface blue. Do not allow the paint to dry. Paint over the freshly painted wall with a paint brush dipped in water. This will increase its translucence. Brush in wave patterns and clean the brush of paint it picks up frequently.
