How to Install a New Clothes Dryer Vent Through the Wall of a House
- 1). From the location of the dryer room, ensure there are no obstacles inside as well as outside of the wall prior to drilling. Identify the location of the wall studs with the stud finder and mark those locations with the pencil so as not to drill through those locations. Use the round end of the pipe as a guide to drawing a circle around to reflect the hole in the wall to slide the vent pipe through.
- 2). Using the circle template on the wall, mark the exact center inside the circle. Using a 1/2-inch bit, drill a hole from the inside wall through to the exterior. Ensure that the drill has penetrated all the way through the exterior wall. Using the hole as a guide, cut from the inside hole to the outer edge of the circle with the saw and proceed to follow the pencil mark and complete cutting out the circle to produce a hole to match the size of the vent pipe. For a wood or siding exterior use a hole saw to cut the appropriate size hole to ensure the pipe will fit through. For a brick exterior, use a 1/2 inch masonry bit to drill a pilot hole in the center of the circle template. Using a cold steel chisel, start from the center hole and chisel out the brick to form the circle until the pipe will slide through.
- 3). From the exterior wall insert the vent housing through the hole and attach the housing to the wall, using the included mounting hardware and drill and screwdriver. Test the vent flap with your fingers to ensure it swings freely and will be able to do with the flow of air from the dryer. Caulk around the exterior of the housing unit to make sure that rain and moisture are not able to get inside the wall.
- 4). From the interior, attach the included elbows included with the dryer vent kit to the rear of the dryer. Apply caulk around the vent pipe where it enters the wall to ensure no insects or moisture is able to reach inside the home. Wrap each pipe joint with the metal tape to ensure the connections stay tight and that they are sealed.
