Oven Broiling Directions
- 1). Know what you are cooking. Different foods cook differently and knowing the difference can make for a delicious meal or burnt one. Another important factor is food preferences. For example, do you prefer rare or well-done steaks? This will affect how hot you heat the broiler.
- 2). Choose an appropriate distance between the heating element and the rack for the food to cook. Many broilers allow you to adjust where the cooking rack rests in the broiler. Broilers found underneath the oven have more limited cooking space than larger broilers in the main oven unit. The closer you put the rack to the heating element, the more likely your food is to char or burn.
- 3). Locate the broiling knob or digital button on the range and begin to preheat the boiler or oven to the desired and suitable broiling temperature for the food. Choose either high or low, or choose a desired temperature setting if your unit allows.
- 4). Cook food according to the suggested cooking time. For well-done steaks of around 1 inch thick, place the rack near the bottom or the broiler, and cook at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 12 to 14 minutes, then flip and cook for another 10 to 12 minutes. Reduce cooking times for medium rare or rare steaks, or for thinner cuts. Cook chicken and fish on the lowest rack position at 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Chicken typically takes 30 to 35 minutes total, with several flips throughout the cooking process, while fish usually takes between 22 to 30 minutes. Flip most fish once, but do not flip fish fillets at all. When the food is cooked, remove it and turn the broiler off.
