Certified Reiki Training

If you would like to receive certified Reiki training, there are a few ways to go about doing so. The method of training has, in many cases, become far less stringent than it used to be and many options are available to you now that have never been available before. Let's start with some history.

Certified Reiki Training: Mikao Usui

When Mikao Usui first discovered Reiki, it took him only a very short time to decide that this healing ability was worth sharing. He immediately began using the newfound healing energy on himself and on his family and through these experiences learned how to use it more efficiently, quickly developing a system that could be taught and shared. Shortly afterward, he was inspired to offer his knowledge and ability to the general public, determined to share this healing energy with as many as he possibly could.

In 1922, Usui set up an organization for the teaching and treatment of Reiki. He used Reiki on many, many people and by 1925 had to move to a larger building to house his popular Reiki training and treatment.

Though he only taught Reiki for a period of less than 5 years, it is believed that Usui trained about 2,000 students, 16 of which went on to become teachers.

Certified Reiki Training: Dr. Chujiro Hyashi

After Mikao Usui's passing, his legacy lived on through his pupils. One of these was Dr. Chujiro Hyashi, who had been a medical doctor in the navy. Hyashi had been charged by his Sensei to develop Reiki into a duplicable system by using his background in medicine, so with this in mind, Dr. Hyashi opened his own clinic and kept meticulous records of each patient, the illnesses and conditions that they reported, and the different techniques used to alleviate those conditions.

It was Hyashi who first began teaching Reiki in a series of Levels, and the technique of teaching Levels I and II was added.

Certified Reiki Training: Mrs. Hawayo Takata

In 1936 Mrs. Takata received Reiki treatments through Dr. Hyashi after being diagnosed with a tumor, gallstones, appendicitis, and asthma. After six months, she was completely healed.

Convinced of its healing power, she decided that she needed to learn this healing ability for herself, and Dr. Hyashi agreed to train he in Reiki I and II. After completing these levels, though, Mrs. Takata was determined to know more and convinced Hyashi to teach her the Shinpiden level. This is the level that we now call "Master Level" and, in fact, it was Mrs. Takata who first coined that term.

In 1938, Mrs. Takata became the first Reiki master in the Western world. She used her knowledge to train throughout the U.S. and the world. She taught Reiki Levels I and II for decades, but it wasn't until 1970 that she decided to begin teaching teachers (Master Level).

Mrs. Takata's system of Reiki was incredibly strict and intended to keep the use of Reiki exclusive to a very small and fortunate minority. She charged $10,000 for her Master Level Training and required that each of her teaching students do the same.

Certified Reiki Training: Today's Options

Fast-forward a few decades and here we are. While some teachers have held religiously to Mrs. Takata's stringent guidelines, many have decided to follow their intuition and offer certified Reiki training at more reasonable fees. The average Reiki teacher will now teach each level in a weekend workshop and, though more affordable than $10,000, the cost of learning each level does tend to increase per level.

It usually looks something like this:
  • Reiki Level I: $150
  • Reiki Level II: $200
  • Reiki Level III: $500

Though far more attainable than Mrs. Takata's certified Reiki training, this still remains out of reach for many very interested people who would love to learn and utilize this powerful healing energy for themselves and for those they care about.

In many ways, the high cost of certified Reiki training has served to keep the use of Reiki exclusive to a select and diligent few.

But much has changed more recently with the advent of the Internet and solid, certifiable distance-learning programs. There are now even more affordable options available to the aspiring Reiki practitioner who wishes to receive certified Reiki training, but doesn't have a few thousand dollars or three very full weekends to expend on it.
