How to Stain IPE
- 1). Sweep the deck off with a push broom to remove any loose debris, dirt or leaves.
- 2). Mix wood cleaner with water in a bucket according to the package directions. Pour a puddle of the cleaner on the IPE. Work the cleaner into the wood with a push broom, starting at one corner and working to the opposite corner to clean the entire area.
- 3). Place a nozzle on a garden hose and rinse the deck thoroughly with medium force. Let the deck dry completely for two days.
- 4). Shake a can of stain to mix it thoroughly. Pour the stain into a paint pan. Screw an extension pole onto a paint roller in a clockwise direction.
- 5). Dip the paint roller into the stain while rolling the nap to coat all sides evenly. Apply the stain, starting in one corner and working with the wood grain. Roll a medium-heavy coat on a board while walking backward to stain one board at a time. Apply the stain on the next board in the same manner. Continue staining the remaining boards.
- 6). Let the stain soak into the IPE for about 30 minutes. Place a clean roller cover on the paint roller. Start at the first board that was stained and roll the excess stain. The roller cover will absorb the excess. Work in the same direction as the stain was applied, changing roller covers when necessary to even the stain and remove all excess puddles.
- 7). Let the stain dry according to the package directions before placing any furniture or items on the deck.
