How to Plant Ryegrass Seed
- 1). Till the soil to a depth of 4 inches using a roto tiller. As you loosen the soil, remove any plants, rocks or other debris from the planting area.
- 2). Spread an inch of aged compost over the soil, followed by the amount and type of fertilizer recommended by your soil test.
- 3). Till the soil again, to a depth of 5 inches to mix the amendments evenly into the soil.
- 4). Broadcast the ryegrass seed with a seed spreader (or by hand) at a rate of roughly 11 ounces per 1,000 square feet or 30 pounds per acre.
- 5). Rake the seed into the soil so that the planting area is level and the seed is mixed into the soil to a depth of roughly 1/4 inch.
- 6). Go over the planting area with a lawn roller (or walk over the soil) to increase the contact between the seed and soil.
- 7). Water the soil with a fine spray from a hose or sprinkler until the top 3 inches of the soil are moist. Keep the soil moist at this depth until the ryegrass seed has germinated and grown 1 to 2 inches. Then allow the top few inches of the soil to dry out between waterings.
