How to Calculate How Much of a Price Is VAT
- 1). Determine the VAT paid from a total amount by first adding one to the percentage rate. For a 19 percent VAT (0.19) that comes to 1.19.
- 2). Divide the total purchase by your Step 1 total. For a purchase of 273.70 Euros, that equals 230 Euros, which gives you the base purchase price.
- 3). Subtract your Step 2 figure from the total. Here, 273.70 Euros minus 230 Euros leaves 43.30 Euros. This is the VAT.
- 1). Multiply the base price by whatever the listed VAT rate is to get the VAT amount. For an item costing 155 Euros, at 17 percent VAT, the VAT is 26.35.
- 2). Add the item cost and VAT cost together for the price you will pay. Here, 155 Euros and 26.35 Euros come to a final figure of 181.35 Euros.
- 3). Calculate the full cost of something your are considering purchases more quickly by multiplying the base item cost by one plus the VAT percentage. In this example, multiplying 155 Euros by 1.17 gets you directly to the final figure of 181.35 Euros.
