How to String a Poulan Trimmer
- 1). Turn the engine off if it's still running. Let the head come to a standstill before reaching out for it. Put the trimmer, with the engine on the ground, where you have comfortable access to the bottom cover.
- 2). Depress both tabs on the opposite sides of the spinning head with your finger and thumb. Pull the bottom cover off. Separate the inner reel from the spring inside the head. Leave the spring connected to the head.
- 3). Clean the dirt, grass and other matter from the cover and reel with a rag; replace them if they are cracked or broken. Cut away the appropriate amount of string for replacement, using scissors. Common Poulan models use .080-inch string about 25 feet long.
- 4). Hold the reel in between the C formed by your thumb and forefinger. Loop the length of string in half. Hook that loop into the notch in the center of the reel, snapping it into place. Stick your index finger into the center of the two strings.
- 5). Pull the string tight and start winding along the reel, following the arrow indicated on the reel. Most Poulan trimmers wind the string clockwise, but if it is wound in the wrong direction the spring won't automatically feed out more string. Wind up all but 6 inches of the string, placing the remaining ends into the slots on each side of the reel.
- 6). Set the wound reel into the center of the spool and hold it down against the spring. Thread the ends of the string into the exits holes on the sides of the head. Push the cover down until it snaps, locking it in place. Pull the string ends out to remove them from the slots.
