How to Wire a Cat 5 Wall Jack
- 1). Cut a hole in the wall for the wall jack box. Take the box and hold it up against the wall in the position where you want the wall jack placed. Trace around the outside of the box with a pencil.
- 2). Insert the 1/4-inch bit into your drill. Drill a hole in each corner of the tracing. Cut along the outline on the drywall with the keyhole saw. Smooth down any rough edges in the drywall hole with sandpaper.
- 3). String the cat 5 cable from the source to the hole in the wall. Drill a hole in the top stud of the wall with the spade bit in order to drop the wire in between the drywall spaces. Pull the wire out through the hole in the drywall.
- 4). Punch out one of the wire holes on the back of the wire box. Insert the cat 5 cable through the back of the box. Insert the box into the wall. Tighten the two screws in the corners until you feel the clamps on the back of the screws grip the wall.
- 5). Strip the last inch off the end of the cat 5 wire with the wire strippers. Separate the colored wires inside. Insert the colored ends of the wires into the same colored jacks on the back of the wall plate. Press the wires into the connectors with the tool included in the faceplate kit.
- 6). Insert the faceplate into the wall box. Secure with the screws.
