Painting Rocking Chairs for Kids
- 1). Wipe down the rocking chair using a damp cloth. Swipe away dust and debris that may have gathered between the slats. Dry the rocker with a soft, dry cloth.
- 2). Rub 100-grit sandpaper over the entire rocker in the direction of the wood grain. Make a smooth surface by rubbing away old varnish. Dust away the sawdust left behind with a soft paintbrush.
- 3). Brush a coat of primer on the rocker using a paintbrush. Do not spray paint the chair. Apply primer evenly and avoid leaving drip marks. Allow the paint to dry for 6 to 12 hours.
- 4). Paint the entire chair with a bright, latex color like lime green, hot pink or royal blue. Use a paintbrush to make long, even strokes. Allow the paint to dry overnight before proceeding.
- 5). Lay or tape stencils on to the rocking chair. Use a pencil to draw the stencil patterns on the chair or paint directly over the stencils. Apply craft paint to make flower, butterfly and rocket ship shapes, for example. Don't bother painting the seat of the rocking chair if you plan to add a cushion.
