How to Draw a Rose With Thorns

12
    • 1). Place the drawing paper on a work surface. Draw a long cylindrical stem on the paper. Consider the position of the stem in relation to where the flower will be located on the paper and draw the stem accordingly.

    • 2). Draw a circle on top of the stem using a pencil. This is the body of the rose flower, so make it proportional to the stem. Make the pencil line light so that it can be modified or erased later on in the drawing process.

    • 3). Sketch an oval approximately 1 inch above the circle. Orient the oval horizontally. The diameter of the oval should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the circle. This represents the opening of the rose flower.

    • 4). Connect the sides of the oval to the circle with curved, slightly concave lines. Draw additional lines curving out and upward from the circle to create the outer edge of the petals. Draw connecting lines from the top of the petal lines back across the circle. One connecting line should come back across the front of the circle and one should extend as if it goes behind the circle.

    • 5). Draw a spiral inside the oval to represent the folded petals within the inside of a partially opened rose flower.

    • 6). Add one leaf on each side of the stem. Draw one halfway up the stem and the other three-quarters of the way up. Draw the leaves as pointed ovals oriented upward with small serrations on the edges.

    • 7). Draw "V"-shaped thorns on alternating sides along the length of the stem. Orient the "V" shape upward and slightly outward from the stem so that it appears to be growing out from the stem just like a real thorn.

    • 8). Erase any stray lines and guide lines from the original shapes that you drew to create a flowing drawing of a rose. Shade the petals and stem with the side edge of the pencil tip to complete the drawing.
