    • 1). Brush a heavy coat of chemical stripper onto the wood surface of the maple butcher block counter. Let it sit on the surface of the counter for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 2). Scrape the old finish off the surface of the maple butcher block counter with a putty knife. Wipe the counter with a wet cloth to clean the surface of chemicals.

    • 3). Sand the entire surface of the maple butcher block counter with 120-grit sandpaper until every last bit of old finish has been removed. Sand the surface of the counter again with 180-grit sandpaper to smooth the wood.

    • 4). Apply a coat of stain onto the surface of the maple butcher block counter with a clean brush. Allow the stain to soak into the wood and then wipe off any excess stain with a clean cloth. Allow the stain to dry.

    • 5). Brush a thin, even coat of polyurethane onto the surface of the maple butcher block counter to seal the wood. Let the coat dry and lightly sand the counter with 180-grit sandpaper. Apply a final thin coat of polyurethane onto the counter and let it dry.
