"Everything Counts: 52 Remarkable Ways to Inspire Excellence and Drive Results" by Gary Ryan Blair is an excellent book to be savored over time and reflected upon, rather than devoured quickly.
As the title suggests, there are fifty-two short chapters, each on a separate topic, that I chose to read one, and sometimes two, at a time.
I found this to be a great way to read the book.
I'd read a chapter and then spend a few minutes thinking about what Blair wrote, and exploring my thoughts on his Call to Action questions.
I found the reading and pondering of the subjects to be quite enjoyable and enlightening.
I included this book in my morning reading, and found reading this book was an inspiring and motivating way to start the day.
By coincidence, the chapter on gratitude happened to be the chapter I read on Thanksgiving morning.
It brought a little extra thought and meaning to start the holiday.
After a short Foreword, Acknowledgments section, and Introduction, the book is divided into three main parts.
These consist of Professional Strategies, Personal Strategies, and Universal Concepts.
Among these three categories are short chapters focusing on individual concepts.
Each chapter is formatted the same way.
Blair first explains why the concept counts and illustrates its importance.
I found him to be right on with so much of what he wrote.
Next comes a short call to action, which usually consisted of a few questions to ask yourself how the concept applies to your own life, and how you want to apply it more in the future.
And finally, each chapter concluded with a Portrait of Excellence, which profiled a person or business and how they embraced the concept the chapter focused upon.
These portraits encompassed a unique mix of people and businesses, some that many have heard of, and others that many will never have heard of before this book.
I found them all to be interesting and inspiring.
Some of the concepts under Professional Strategies include: Every Detail, Commitment, Consistency, Planning, Goal Setting, Innovation, and Networking.
Topics found in the Personal Strategies include: Character, Passion, Courage, Self-Discipline, Etiquette, Gratitude, and Loyalty.
In the section on Universal Concepts you find: Truth, Joy, Simplicity, Failure, Contribution, History, and Peace.
The book concludes with a short list of ten reasons to visit the author on-line.
I really enjoyed reading this book, and agree with Blair that everything does count.
Every decision we make comes with a consequence.
Some are greater than others, and yes, some decisions matter more than others, but they all count and all move us closer to our goals or farther away.
I think Blair really hit on the importance of this, and illustrated why the 52 topics he chose to include really do count, and why you should pay attention to them if you desire to reach excellence.
