How to Repaint Motorcycle Plastic

27

    Prepping and Painting

    • 1). Use a manual specific to your motorcycle to remove the pieces that are to be painted. This may include the front fairing, side panels, tail fairing, and frame protectors.

    • 2). Fill a bucket with warm water and toss in a few pieces of 400 grit waterproof sandpaper. Allow them to soak for 5 minutes.

    • 3). Wet sand the surface of each piece to be painted with 400 grit sandpaper. Do not completely remove the paint or powder coat already applied to the plastics. Aim simply to scuff them so that the new paint will stick evenly and smoothly. Avoid dips or valleys in the surface of the parts.

    • 4). Allow each piece of the bike to air dry completely after sanding. Using a towel or rag may result in lint on the surface that will show through new paint.

    • 5). Fill a bucket with water and toss in a few pieces of 600 grit waterproof sandpaper.

    • 6). In a well-ventilated area, spray the first coat of paint onto each of the motorcycle pieces. Do not aim to completely cover the old paint in one coat. Instead, try to spray evenly and lightly across the entire surface.

    • 7). Allow the first coat of paint to dry, and wet sand it with 600 grit sandpaper. Sand lightly and evenly and try not to completely remove any of the paint.

    • 8). Refill the bucket with new water and add a few pieces of 800 grit waterproof sandpaper.

    • 9). Spray each piece of the motorcycle with a second coat of paint. You may be a little heavier on the paint on this go-around, but be sure to still spray evenly across the entire surface.

Allow the second coat of paint to dry completely. Make certain the previous paint cannot be seen through the new coat. Spray more if necessary. When dry, wet sand the paint with 800 grit sandpaper and apply a light final coat of paint.

    Finishing Touches

    • 1). Spray, lightly and evenly, a coat of clear enamel onto each of the parts. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 2). Wet sand the surface of each part extremely lightly with 800 grit sandpaper. Be sure to avoid sanding all the way through the new clear coat.

    • 3). Refill the bucket with clean water, and toss in a few pieces of 1000 grit waterproof sandpaper.

    • 4). Spray a heavy coat of clear enamel on each of the pieces. Be more liberal with the application, but still try to make the clear coat even across the surface.

    • 5). Wet sand the final coat with 1000 grit sandpaper lightly and evenly to remove any imperfections in the clear coat. Allow the pieces to dry completely before reinstalling them on your motorcycle with your model-specific manual.
