How to Install an Air Conditioner in a Double Hung Window
- 1
Double Hung Window
Choose a window within the power cord's reach of a grounded three-prong outlet. Don't use an extension cord or splice the power cord to make it longer, because the air conditioner may draw more power than the wiring is designed to handle. - 2). Remove the chassis screws and ground wire, and slide the air conditioner out of the cabinet if your air conditioner is meant to separate from its cabinet during installation. If not, skip this step.
- 3). Install any mounting hardware that attaches to the air conditioner's cabinet. Screw the accordion panels (side curtains) to the sides of the cabinet.
- 4). Open the bottom panel of the window. Attach sill support brackets to the outer window sill. Stick on any insulation strips supplied with your air conditioner to the window frame as directed in the product literature.
- 5). With a helper, center the cabinet on the sill from inside and close the window to secure it. The bottom channel bracket should sit on the outer window sill, and the top bracket should rest against the inside of the lower window sash frame.
- 6
Extend the accordion panels to fit snugly into the window jams and screw them into place. Secure the cabinet to the sash frame with short L-brackets. Mount any external supports on the outside wall and attach to the bottom of the cabinet. - 7
Air Conditioner Foam Seal
Slide the air conditioner back into the cabinet, and attach the ground wire and chassis screws. Press foam insulation strips into the gap between the inside windows panes to form an airtight seal.
