How to Treat an Oil Stain
- 1). Pour a little bit of cornstarch, salt, baby powder or talcum powder onto the stain. Let it sit for about two minutes, then lift the item and allow the powder to fall into the garbage can. The substance will absorb some of the oil.
- 2). Pour a heavy-duty liquid detergent, a laundry stain remover product or a petroleum-based solvent spray onto the stain as soon as possible.
- 3). Rub the detergent or pretreatment spray into the stain with an old, soft toothbrush. Put several layers of absorbent paper toweling behind the stain so the oil doesn't spread to other areas of the garment.
- 4). Wash the piece of clothing with your regular clothes washing detergent in the hottest water it can handle. Read the care tag to ascertain if the fabric can handle hot water. Wash the garment alone so the oil stain won't spread to other clothing items.
- 5). Examine the clothing for stains before putting it into the dryer. Once an item is dried, it is close to impossible to remove a stain.
