How to Remove Hair Color Stains From a Door

12
    • 1). Sand the surface with coarse sandpaper to remove the finish. If the finish was already badly worn, the hair coloring may have penetrated deeply into the wood, making the stain difficult or even impossible to remove.

    • 2). Place an old towel or plastic tablecloth on the floor underneath the door to protect the carpet or tile. Mix 2 tbsp. oxalic acid with 1 pint lukewarm water in a glass jar. Paint the stain and the surrounding surface with the mixture. Oxalic acid is corrosive and toxic. Wear rubber gloves and follow all package directions carefully.

    • 3). Wait 20 minutes while the acid bleaches the wood. If the stain remains, wait 20 minutes more.

    • 4). Wipe the surface with a cloth dipped in water, followed by a dry, clean cloth. Allow the door to dry for several hours.

    • 5). Sand the stain and the surrounding area with the fine sand paper until it is smooth. Paint the bleached area with a wood stain that matches the stain originally used on the door. Wait two to three hours for the stain to dry.

    • 6). Paint the repaired area with one or two coats of polyurethane sealer or varnish to protect the wood. Allow the sealer to dry completely between coats.
