Types of Built in Gas Grills

    • There are many brands of built in grills but there are two basic types. The indoor gas grill which is normally installed into a kitchen center island or under a large hood in the counter section. These grills come in various sizes ranging from 24 to 48 inches. Another type of grill is the outdoor built in gas grill. Outdoor kitchens are gaining popularity every year. They can be as simple as a small framed island with a counter. Others are as elaborate as a full brick or stone counters with built in grills, refrigerators and storage areas. Some even have shade umbrellas over them.

How the Built in Gas Grill Works

    • The indoor gas grill is what is called a drop in. This means the unit is dropped in to a counter either in an island or on the main counter area. They are fueled by either liquid propane gas or natural gas. A small copper tube bring the fuel from it's source to the grill. It is then distributed throughout the unit through a burner when the grill is on. It can be lit by an electronic ignition or by a pilot light that stays lit all the time. There is a ceramic grate that the grease drips down on and causes the smoke which gives the food that grilled flavor. The smoke is either pulled into a fan that sits right next to the grill called a down draft and taken out of the house or it is pulled up to a large hood and taken out. The outdoor grill works the same way except there is no need for a fan. They also commonly use lava rock instead of a ceramic grate.

    Maintaining Your Grill

    • Indoor grills are made with non-stick surfaces for easy cleaning. The top grates can be removes to get to the ceramic grate inside. These normally come out to and can be placed in the dishwasher. Under the counter there is a grease jar installed that has to be emptied and cleaned each time the grill is used also. Depending how often you use your grill you should check the burner often to look for any corrosion or clogging. Outdoors grills are much the same except the grates are often cleaned by burning the food off and scrubbing with a wire brush. These grills should be covered with a waterproof cover when cooled off and not in use to protect them from the weather.
