• Gibbys steak house is probably one of the more historic restaurants in Montreal, solely because of its location. The restaurant sits in the converted stables of what was once a large hospital complex hundreds of years ago. Today the original gated entrance still stands and serves as the entryway to the restaurant. Inside the historic atmosphere is continued with a quiet, private and high-end feel to the dining area. The steaks are world-class and the restaurant owners make sure to select only the highest grades of beer. Several cuts are available and the serving choices are also numerous. Classic grilled steak is, of course, an option but several other options include Dijon-mustard encrusted sirloin or a strip steak served with a cognac-and-greens peppercorn sauce. The restaurant also features a full cocktail lounge adjacent to the main dining room. Le Keg

• Le Keg Steakhouse and Bar is a popular chain of steak houses with several locations in Canada. Its Montreal incarnation is consistently rated as one of the better steak houses in the Montreal area. Located in the heart of Old Montreal near the banks of the St. Laurent River the steak house offers a menu full of classic steak house dishes and sides. The choice of beef cuts is so vast that the menu here is divided into sections that cover each cut and the choices available. Sirloins, filets and prime ribs are the most popular options and each come in several serving options and sizes. Sides are fairly standard, with baked potatoes coming on all steak dishes although several vegetable options are available in larger portions to share with the table. The atmosphere at Le Keg is very friendly and the restaurant avoids the darker and often too-quiet feel of upscale steak houses. While Le Keg can often get crowded at peak hours there is a full bar offering not only a large selection of drinks, but also a specialized menu of appetizers and smaller entrees.

Silva Grillades

• Silve Grillades Steak House is a trendy upscale restaurant in eastern Montreal just across the St. Laurent River in the up-and-coming Vieux-Longueuil area. The steak house prides itself on a Portuguese influence in its steak dishes, for which it has attracted plenty of praise and positive reviews. The menu is rather limited in comparison to other steak houses of the area, but the quality of the beef and the flavor created in the Portuguese-style dishes makes it one of the better steaks in Montreal. Ribeye, New York strip and filets are the main cuts offered and each is grilled to order with vegetables and your choice of numerous side dishes. The atmosphere is relaxed and with a modern feel. The dining area is bright and open and the open-air patio is an excellent place to enjoy your meal during cooperative weather.
