Specifications and Lubrication

• 1). Select the right oil. Husqvarna recommends its own brand of vegetable-oil-based, biodegradable chainsaw lube. However, the owner's manual states that any standard chainsaw oil is acceptable. In areas where chainsaw oil is not available, Husqvarna recommends EP 90 automotive transmission oil as a substitute. The chain oil capacity of the 55 chainsaw is 0.3 liters.
  
  
• 2). Fill the chain lube reservoir. The fill plug is located on the front left side of the saw, ahead of the front handle. Lay the chainsaw on its right side so the fill plug is facing up. Remove the fill plug and fill the oil tank with the specified amount of chain lube. Replace the fill plug.
  
  
• 3). Check the operation of the automatic oil pump. The relative capacities of the Husqvarna 55's fuel and chain oil tanks are designed so the saw will run out of fuel before it runs out of chain oil. Verifying the chain lube function should be done every time you fill the fuel tank. Find a light-colored surface and place the chain bar about 8 inches away from it. Run the engine at 3/4 throttle for one minute. A dark line of oil should be clearly visible on the lighter surface.
  
  
• 4). Grease other moving parts. A good quality bearing grease should be smeared on the bar tip sprocket at the end of the chain bar every time you refuel. The rear drive sprocket on the clutch drum has a needle bearing, which should also be lubricated with bearing grease once a week.
