balboapark.org - Located on Point Loma, this national monument, maintained by the National Park Service, celebrates the 1542 visit by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. He is believed to be the first European to have set foot on what is now the West Coast of the United States. There's plenty here for kids to do, including a chance to earn a Junior Ranger badge.
The property is also home to the Point Loma Lighthouse, which has served as an aid to captains navigating their vessels in coastal waters since the mid-19th century. Although the lighthouse tower is generally off limits to visitors, there are three exhibit rooms on the ground floor that chronicle the lighthouse's colorful history. From December to March, Point Loma offers visitors an excellent vantage point from which to spot migrating gray whales.
