Las Vegas Travel in December
- Served by McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas is accessible via air year-round. JetBlue, Frontier and other airlines offer regular non-stop service from major cities such as New York and Los Angeles. International airlines such as Air Canada may alter their departure schedules to Las Vegas in winter, as demand is usually lower compared to summer months. The city is served by several interstate highways. Driving through adjacent mountains (for example, on I-15 between California and Nevada) could be affected in December by inclement weather at high elevations.
- According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, there are over 100,000 hotel rooms in the city. Generally, availability and price depend on time of year, day of the week and size of events or conventions in town at the time. In December, hotel availability is widespread, except for the days surrounding New Year's Eve. Some casinos offer discounts on rooms and even free stays for gamblers willing to wager large amounts of money. Booking stays during the week as opposed to the weekends usually results in cheaper room rates.
- Many of Las Vegas' best restaurants and clubs are situated in casinos, which never close. In December, you will find the same offerings afforded to visitors year-round, with the added benefit of less crowds. The exception to this rule is around New Year's Eve, when many people choose to ring in the new year in the city. December proves to be a great time to take in a show; many performers and productions add a special Christmas theme to their acts.
- Hundreds of concerts, conventions and gatherings occur in Las Vegas throughout the year; December is no exception. From local artistic offerings such as First Friday (galleries and artists on exhibit for free) to performances by world-famous musicians, there is plenty to see in the city. The local Christmas parade is held in nearby Boulder City, while several areas in Las Vegas put up elaborate light displays (although you may need a rental car to reach these locations).
- Las Vegas' desert environment ensures cooler temperatures and little to no precipitation in December. High temperatures average in the upper 50s to low 60s, although it is not uncommon for certain days to hit upwards of 70. Overall, you can expect pleasant conditions for walking around outside, although it can get chilly late at night and early in the morning. Sunshine is abundant and you may want to utilize sunscreen if outdoors for extended periods.
