Ideas for Reaching Tall Skylights
- Stepladders can be used to reach skylights that are 10 feet or less from ground level. If the skylights are higher than 10 feet, an extension ladder may be a better option, provided that there is a lip or a ledge it can safely rest on near the skylight. If using an extension ladder, have a helper hold the bottom of the ladder securely so that it does not slip.
- Scaffolding is a temporary structure, typically made of either steel or aluminum that can be built as high as needed to reach a skylight. The benefit of scaffolding is its platform which sits on the top layer and can be walked on and hold supplies. The downside of scaffolding is that it can be time-consuming and heavy to assemble.
- A man lift, also known as an aerial platform, is usually seen on construction sites, but can be rented small enough to fit in a larger home where there are skylights that are too tall to reach with a ladder. A man lift is a mechanical platform that can be operated from a basket which is attached to boom that extends up into the air.
- If the skylight is only a few feet out of reach when on the ground or on a step ladder, consider attaching extension handles to cleaning tools to reach it for cleaning. Extension, or telescoping handles that are used by painters, can be attached to brooms and mops. Towels can be tied around the broom for drying and dusting tasks.
