How to Get Rid of Shiny Spots on Velvet
- 1). Dab the stain gently and repeatedly with a clean, absorbent cloth. Avoid pressing with firm pressure to prevent the stain from absorbing further into the velvet. Continue dabbing until the stain is dry.
- 2). Fill a 2-ounce spray bottle with 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap and 1 ounce warm water. Shake the contents for 15 second for a thorough mix. The water helps dilute the detergent for proper cleaning.
- 3). Test the cleaning solution by spraying it onto a hidden area of velvet on the couch. Flip over a cushion and lightly spray a hidden corner of the couch, for example. Add more water to the solution if any discoloration or shrinkage is immediately evident.
- 4). Spray the cleaning solution directly onto the shiny spot. Rub the cleaning solution with a sponge brush in the direction of the velvet nap -- the direction in which the fibers automatically fold -- until the stain is removed.
- 5). Dab the stain gently and repeatedly with a clean, absorbent cloth until the stain is dry. Vacuum the spot with a vacuum hose in the direction of the nap to remove any excess dust or dirt.
