How to Remove Dark Marks From Cedar
- 1). Dilute bleach in a cleaning bucket, with a ratio of about one gallon of water per cup of bleach.
- 2). Use the bleach solution to cover dark spots on cedar caused by mold damage. After a few minutes, the dark spot should fade as the bleach kills the mold. Rinse with water.
- 3). Remove the finish on the cedar or layers of the wood surface if the dark spot is a burn or cannot be removed with bleach. Use a power sander for bare wood and a combination of chemical stripper and a dull scraper to remove finish.
- 4). Continue sanding bare wood until you no longer see the dark spot. For finished wood, sand down some of the wood surface if you can still see the dark spot after removing the finish.
- 5). Clean off residue using a cloth and denatured alcohol. Wait for the cedar to dry.
- 6). Use a paintbrush to apply a coat of stain or finish if necessary to restore the cedar to the same color as the surrounding wood.
