Robert Adams: The Place We Live Exhibit
About Robert Adams:
Photographer Robert Adams grew up in the suburbs of Denver, and captured the metro area's growth in stark black-and-white photos during the 1960s and 1970s. Adams returns to the Mile High City with an exhibit titled "Robert Adams: The Place We Live" on display at the Denver Art Museum until Jan. 1, 2012.
Adams had originally mapped out quite a different career path, earning his Ph.D.
in English and teaching as a professor at Colorado College. While teaching, he turned to photography to capture the ongoing growth of the American West, and eventually become recognized for his role in the "New Topographics" movement.
Photography of the West:
"The West is his subject, it's his passion and it's the thing he cares most about," said Eric Paddock, curator of photography at the Denver Art Museum, about Adams' focus for his career. After living in Colorado for almost three decades, Adams moved to Oregon in 1997, and the exhibit also includes photographs of California and the Oregon coast.
"These are pictures that are of and about our little corner of the universe," said Paddock. Paddock said Adams "is a local photographer of international stature," and has displayed photos at museums across the U.S. and Europe, but is not as well known in Colorado.
DAM is First U.S. Venue:
"Often there are things we pass by everyday and take for granted," Paddock said. "He just looks a little more carefully an doesn't take anything for granted." The exhibit's photos include an illuminated ferris wheel in Longmont, a night street scene in Lakewood and a mobile home park in Denver.
The Denver Art Museum is the first U.S. venue for "Robert Adams: The Place We Live." After the exhibit leaves Denver, it will travel to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Yale University Art Gallery in 2012. The exhibit will journey to Spain, Germany and France in 2013, and then to Switzerland and England in 2014.
