The Taos Pueblo outside of Taos, New Mexico is a large adobe community that has belonged to the Tiwa tribe of the Native American Pueblo people for 1,000 years. Here you can find beautiful bead work, pottery, sculpture and ritual artifacts produced with skills that have been handed down through generations. - Taos Pueblo's silversmiths have a reputation for the beauty and quality of their workmanship. At the Pueblo, you can find plain silver jewelry or a silver set with turquoise, coral or purple oyster shells. Native American bead work is also available.
- The landscapes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains are often depicted in the paintings of Taos artists, as are other subjects from nature. Representations of Tiwa warriors and family life help visitors understand the culture and people of the Taos Pueblo.
- The sculptures of Taos Pueblo are lifelike depictions of native Pueblo life. Artistic representations of animal life and human forms depict the tribe's appreciation of the environment and the people who inhabit it. There are large and small pieces, and also "fetishes," which are small, carved depictions of animals sacred to the Tiwa and Zuni people. These pieces are carved in antler, jet, dolomite or the more expensive turquoise, coral and amber.
- Taos Pueblos pottery offers an array of styles, shapes, colors and textures. The pieces, which are painted with traditional symbols of the Tiwa culture, are made with clay that contains mica and gives the pottery a fine sheen.
- If Native American artifacts are your passion, the Taos Pueblo also has finely-crafted drums, carved flutes, bows and arrows, shields and painted panels of the American Southwest.
- Native blankets, moccasins, clothing and textile art also show the variety and individuality of the native craftsmen of the Tao Pueblo.
