A Mold Removal Guide
- Mold is constantly floating throughout your home. It will begin to grow only when it lands in a suitable area. This is a moist place with little light and poor circulation. Knowing this will help you locate mold growth in your home. Look in crawlspaces, basements, under rugs and behind wallpaper. A moldy area typically smells musty.
- Prepare the area to facilitate mold removal. When you clean mold you are agitating the spores, and they can easily spread to other areas of your home. Before you clean it, close doors and windows that open to other areas of your home. This will keep the spores from spreading. Open windows and doors to the outside to ventilate the area.
- Mold spores can get into your lungs and begin to grow there. This lung infection can cause serious, long-term problems. Prevent this by wearing a high-efficiency dust mask when you're cleaning mold. Also put on goggles and gloves to protect your hands from the cleaning solution.
- To remove the mold, spray it with a detergent-, bleach- or white vinegar-based cleaning solution. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes before going over it with a soft-bristled scrub brush. Rinse the area with clear water, and let it dry completely. Throw away all of the paper towels and tools you used to ensure that the mold spores don't move to another area of your home.
