How to Enjoy Free Activities in Philadelphia
- 1). Take the self-guided Constitutional Walking Tour of Philadelphia, a 3-mile walking tour that includes 30 historical attractions. See The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Old City Hall and much more. Reservations are not required. While the tour can be taken at any time, keep in mind that hours at each attraction vary. To pick up a map of this tour, visit the Independence Visitors Center at 1 N. Independence Mall West at 6th & Market Streets.
- 2). Stroll the unique attraction of South Street lined with more than 100 eclectic and specialty item shops. Bars and restaurants are plentiful throughout the street to satisfy every appetite.
- 3). Enjoy a free performance at the Kimmel Center. Giggle over a puppet show or enjoy the smooth sounds of jazz or orchestra music. Performances run on Friday, Saturdays or Sundays and vary throughout the year. Located at 260 South Broad Street on the Avenue of the Arts .
- 4). Enjoy the sounds of the historic Wanamaker Organ, now located in Macy's Department Store. Originally created for the department store John Wanamaker, this massive instrument with 10,000 pipes, built in 1904, now entertains shoppers at Macy's who now showcases the organ since taking over the store.
Recitals lasting 45 minutes are performed on a regular basis. The schedule is as follows: Monday through Saturday at 12 noon; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday and Friday at 7p.m. Tour the console area on the second floor after the concert, also free of charge. Located on 13th and Market Streets. - 5). Learn more about the history of our great country, the United States of America, and how the Liberty Bell played a part in it. Discover what it is cracked, why the word "Pennsylvania" is spelled wrong, and get to know more about those brave men who lived during that historic period of our nation. View a wealth of special exhibits and great details about this historic artifact. Located at Market Street between 5th and 6th Streets.
- 6). Take a free tour of Independence Hall, located just across the street from the Liberty Bell. View the area where our forefathers including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, George Washington and many others signed the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Tickets are required and can be obtained from the Independence Visitor's Center at 1 N. Independence Mall West at 6th and Market Streets.
