How to Get Rid of a Urine Smell
- 1). Place a layer of paper towels over the urine stain, if it's still wet. Add a layer of newspaper over the layer of paper towels, and stand on it for a minute or two. Repeat this step as necessary until the area on the carpet is as dry as you can get it.
- 2). Rinse the soiled patch with cold water to remove any remaining residue. Blot this dry (don't rub) with paper towels, or vacuum it up with a wet vac (a vacuum cleaner that pulls up liquid).
- 3). Rent an extractor (a carpet-cleaning machine that injects water into carpeting, then immediately vacuums it up) and fill it with cold water. Run the extractor over the pet stain until it is completely removed. Avoid using steam vacs, however, which may actually make the problem worse by setting the stain into the carpet.
- 4). Wash machine-washable items in the washer as usual, but add a 1-pound box of baking soda along with your regular detergent.
