- View 19th-century American landscape paintings and contemporary sculptures at the Castellani Art Museum. Located on the Niagara University campus, the museum houses works of art dating to the 1850s, along with modern art from the late 20th century. The permanent collection consists of drawings, sculptures, photos and paintings from American and European artists, including Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. The museum also features an Underground Railroad Movement exhibit containing artifacts, photos and books. Temporary exhibits are also on display. The museum is closed on Mondays. Admission is free. Whirlpool State Park, located along the Robert Moses Parkway, features an upper, or street, level with numerous lookouts and a lower level that runs beside the Niagara River. Steep stairs and trails provide access to the lower level. From both levels, visitors can see the Whirlpool basin, which reaches depths of 125 feet, and the 1-mile-long Whirlpool Rapids. Park amenities include a picnic area and playground on the upper level. Visitors can hike or bike on the lower level's nature trails. The park also provides fishing areas. The aquarium houses more than 1,500 marine animals, including piranhas and eels, and features exhibits such as a tidal pool and coral reef. The Great Lakes exhibit contains local aquatic species. Visitors can watch sea lion and seal shows, as well as shark feedings. Behind-the-scenes interactive encounters with penguins, seals or sea lions can also be arranged for an additional fee.
